If you have ever experienced a time when something going on in your mind coincided strangely with something that happened in the physical world, then you have experienced synchronicity. You suddenly think about someone; the phone rings and they’re on the other end. You dream about someone you haven’t seen in years, and discover that they just died. You hear a name that you’ve never heard before, and suddenly you’re hearing it everywhere. You have an idea that you’ve never thought before, and suddenly that idea is everywhere.

Carl Jung believed that these types of incidents were more than coincidence, and that there is a connection between our psychological states and the physical world. He called this phenomena synchronicity, and referred to it as an “A-causal connecting principle.” Meaning, essentially, that We Are One, and everything is connected, including our minds and inner states and the real physical world around us. Just as the physical world affects us, so we also affect the physical world. We can’t identify a traditional scientific cause and reaction for synchronicity, we can only experience it and recognize that it happens.

Jung became consciously aware of the existence of this phenomena during an analysis session with a patient. This patient was speaking about her dreams that were centered around some rare Egyptian scarab beatles, when a strange scarab beatle flew through the open window and landed on Jung. This was not an insect that was native to that part of the world, and Jung became convinced that this insect had been produced from the collective unconscious portion of his psyche.

Once we are aware of the existence of synchronicity, we begin to see it everywhere. We begin to see meaning in coincidences that used to seem like mere chance. We begin to understand that there is a connection between our psyche and the physical world. This is not something that we can explain in terms of cause and effect, and it’s not useful to us to think about in those terms. It is the sheerly symbolic nature of the phenomena that is useful to us. Our unconscious reaches out to our consciousness with these symbols, which represent some knowledge contained in the collective unconscious. If we are open to recognizing and accepting these symbols, it becomes possible for us to consciously “experience” this knowledge in a spiritual sense.

Western civilization has come to value intellectual and scientific ways of recognizing meaning at the expense of recognizing value in experiential knowledge, but there are many cultures that recognize the importance of these a-causal patterns of meaning. Asian philosophies and ways of life include a strong interdependence on the physical world and state of mind. For example, the art of feng shui is centered around the idea that our physical surroundings effect our tangible and psychological well-being. Native American Indian cultures often name children based on things that occur at the time of birth. For example, if an eagle flies over as a baby is born, that would be considered so important that the child might be named “Flying Eagle.”

In terms of astrology, we recognize that the phenomena of synchronicity provides some justification for the study of astrology. If our unconscious minds effect the physical world, then we are effecting the stars, and the stars are effecting us, and we can learn something about ourselves by studying our natal charts. Also, the symbolic nature of astrology is a vehicle for messages from the collective unconscious, and thus for spiritual experiences that give us new knowledge of ourselves.

Feng Shui is the art of living in harmony with your physical surroundings. An ancient Chinese philosophy, the term “feng shui” means “wind and water”. The original idea in ancient China was that it was nice to live in a house with hills behind you to shield you from wind, and with a stream or some sort of running water in front of your house. The Chinese felt that people who lived with “feng shui” were much more likely to be happy and prosperous.

Ch’i

The practice of feng shui involves creating and maintaining an environment that promotes and enhances the flow of ch’i. Ch’i is the lifeforce that exists in all living things. Positive ch’i is created whenever there is beauty or something is done well. Negative ch’i is created when there is clutter, ugliness, or things are done poorly. Positive energy and harmony with the world are created when we keep our home full of fresh air and light, and don’t neglect any portion of it. Feng shui believes that neglecting part of your home will encourage the flow of negative ch’i in that part of the house, and that the corresponding part of your life will suffer.

Yin-Yang

Feng shui also includes the effort to balance the influences of yin and yang. The words “yin” and “yang” mean the opposite sides of a hill. The ancient Tao Yin-Yang symbol represents the Chinese belief that everything is in constant motion, and that everything is interconnected. Where the black represents yin and the white represents yang, we see that each contains a spot of the other. This symbolizes the idea that yin cannot exist with yang, and yang cannot exist without yin. Although they are opposites, they would not exist without each other. If there was no good, there would be no bad. If there was no light, there would be no dark.

In feng shui, anything hilly or elevated is considered to be yang. Anything flat is considered yin. We must have a balance of yin and yang in our environment to achieve feng shui.

Feng Shui Magic Square

To practice feng shui, we apply a magic square over the plan of our home.

Feng Shui Magic Square

This side of the square aligns with your front door

Legend tells us that the feng shui magic square originated about 5000 years ago when Wu of Hsia and some men observed a large tortoise from the Yellow River that had markings on its shell that created a perfect magic square. Every horizontal, diagonal, and vertical row added up to the number fifteen. This was considered so remarkable that Wu called in some wise men to look at the situation. This group worked for a long time and came up with the basics of feng shui (along with I Ching and Chinese astrology). We don’t know whether or not this story is true, but we do know that the practice of feng shui is a truly ancient Chinese custom.

Elements

The Chinese believe that the universe is composed of five elements. These elements figure heavily in Chinese astrology, and also in feng shui. The elements are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. In the Cycle of Production, the elements are placed in a circle in which each element supports the elements on either side of it. In the Cycle of Destruction, the elements interfere with their neighboring elements.

To promote the Cycle of Production, we maximize opportunities in our environment to allow elements to nurture each other, and we remedy situations in which elements seem likely to conflict with each other.

We are all made up of a combination of the elements, but we have one main elemental influence in our person. To discover your native element, click here.

The wood element is creative, social, ethical, and generous. Wood’s natural color is green. In your home, the wood element can be represented by green colors, plants, and flowers.

The fire element is active, strong, impulsive and attractive. Fire can be warm and comforting, or destructive. Fire’s natural color is red. In your home, the fire element can be represented by red colors, fires and candles.

The earth element is solid, reliable, stable and patient. Earth’s natural color is yellow. In your home, the earth element can be represented by yellow colors, pottery and ceramics.

The metal element is power, money, success and intensity. It can also be destructive. Metal’s natural colors are gold, silver, or anything metallic. In your home, the metal element can be represented by anything metallic, preferably something attractive made from a high quality metal.

The water element is flowing, travelling, learning, communicating, and influencing others. Water can be gentle or destructive. Water’s natural colors are blue and black. In your home, the water element can be represented by an aquarium or indoor fountain, or by anything black or blue.

To support our natural elements, we want to have some representation of the element in our home. In the Cycle of Production, the element to the left of our native element feeds, nurtures, and creates our element, so we also want to have representation of that element in our home.

When there are multiple people living in one home, we need to make sure that everyone’s supporting elements are present in the home, and that there are no major conflicts between the presence of the elements. Balance is an important concept in feng shui, and it’s important to have all elements present in your home to achieve balance. However, it’s often easier to choose one element to enhance in one room or part of the house, based upon who “owns” the room or spends the most time there.

Shars

A shar, or poison arrow, is any straight line or arrow pointed at you or your home. A shar is believed to be a potential for disaster. Shars can exist outside your home or inside your home.

Common shars upon your home from the outside are driveways, roads, sidewalks, and the corner of a neighboring house. The worst kind of outside shar is anything that is directed at your front door. For example, a sidewalk or pathway that is laid out in a straight line towards the front door of a home is considered a major shar. Its existence greatly increases the chances of disaster for those who live in that home.

Shars can be removed if they can’t be seen. If the corner of a neighbor’s house points directly at your house, you can remove the shar by erecting a fence that obstructs the view of that house. Shars that can’t be disguised (such as the front pathway) should ideally be removed.

Shars inside a home are generally created from things like table corners and wall protrusions. The Chinese often use mirrors in their homes to deflect shars. Since shars are only impactful when they can be seen, a well-placed screen or mirror will get rid of the shar.

General Home Care

The practice of feng shui may seem daunting to people who are new to the art. At ChartPlanet.com, we aren’t suggesting that you go hire a contractor to conceal all of the beams in your home, or that you rent a jackhammer to destroy the sidewalk leading to your house. You must be educated and sure in your decision to take such drastic measures. However, we can comfortably and enthusiastically suggest that you adopt the basic principles of feng shui in your home, which are as follows:

Think of King Lear, who sinned knowingly and scoffed at the stars. Or Prospero in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, who defied the stars and then used them to his benefit. The “star-cross’d” Romeo believed the poison from the apothecary was the only thing that would “shake the yoke of inauspicious stars” from his “world-wearied flesh.” And Anthony, in Julius Caesar, attributed his first defeat to the fact that the stars had forsaken him, blaming the moon’s eclipse for his ultimate fall.
In all of Shakespeare’s 37 plays there are more than a hundred allusions to astrology, and many of his characters’ actions are said to be favored or hindered by the stars. The signs of the zodiac are mentioned in six of Shakespeare’s plays, and the planets may even be blamed for disasters, especially as they wander from their spheres. Several of Shakespeare’s characters were governed by particular stars, as Posthumous was born under the benevolent planet Jupiter, and thus had a favorable destiny at the end of the play. Another character, Monsieur Parolles, was born under Mars and became known fittingly as a soldier. The moon–known for its influence on emotions and self-image–was said to govern Elizabeth, who wept throughout the play Richard III. These examples and many other astrological passages scattered throughout his dramatic works show that Shakespeare was at least interested in astrology and used the art abundantly in the creation of some of his most striking passages. He probably did this because it would have an appeal to the Elizabethan audience at the time. Whether he had a sincere interest in astrology is unknown.
Elizabethan poetry contained a cosmic order that included stars, the planets, the sun and the earth. There was a general fear of chaos and upsetting the order of things. There was also a chain of being, and everything was related to that chain. Despite Copernicus, most Elizabethans believed the earth was flat and the heavens constituted fire and the highest perfection–light. There was a sharp division between everything beneath the sphere of the moon, and all the rest of the universe. The heavens were eternal and made of ether, while everything under the moon–such as man–was subject to decay.
Angels were the intermediary between earth and man, were purely intellectual, and thought to possess free will. However, this never conflicted with God’s will. Angels could make the connection with God immediately as messengers and guardians of men. The nine hierarchies of angels were thought to inhabit the nine spheres: primum mobile, fixed stars, Saturn, Jupiter Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon. The stars and planets were thought to sing to the angels, which were made of brightness and assumed a body of ether when they appeared to human sight. The planets, like other parts of nature, were merely tools for God’s will, and their orbit and natural rhythms were kept according to God’s order.
Many times a soul was compared to a planet or sphere, with an angel revolving it. John Donne’s poetry reveals this, and poets such as Shakespeare wrote about how the motions of the spheres made music, although we as humans were not supposed to be able to hear it. An example is in The Merchant of Venice, when Lorenzo says to Jessica:

               "Such harmony is in immortal souls;

But whilst this muddy vesture of decay

Doth grossly close it in, we cannot hear it."

The planets thus were communicating agents from eternity to mankind, and the stars were said to dictate how everything under the moon changes. The stars were the medium between God and man, yet sometimes an Elizabethan audience may live in terror of them. This terror was mostly superstitious, as many believed the stars could actually cause bad things to happen, especially natural disasters. God’s Providence, however, dictated that superstition was man inflicting beliefs upon himself, and that the stars were not harmful but beneficent, and that they were created to do good.
Most Elizabethans believed the stars and planets held some kind of power over the ‘baser side’ of man, and were to be used as tools of God, but they did not believe the stars held power over the supreme side of man–the immortal part. Thus man had free will and could overcome his fate by choosing good; the stars couldn’t force him to do anything. Religious education or art could overcome any fate written in the stars. The Elizabethans were still afraid, however, and searched for some answer to overwrite any destiny they saw shining for them in the heavens.
For many in Shakespeare’s time, planets and stars were people personified. The heavenly spheres had eternal souls. The fall of mankind hurt man, but the stars completed him, as long as he realized his two highest faculties–understanding and free will.

“How much is lost through disbelief!”
–Heraclitus

Carl G. Jung believed that there is an indisputable connection between our minds and our bodies. Most people today would agree with that assessment. Our bodies affect our minds, and our minds affect our bodies. Our external situation affects our bodies, which affects our minds, and vice versa.

Taking it a step further, he believed that we affect our physical environment, and that ultimately, we affect the solar system. The solar system affects us, we affect the solar system. Our lives are not “caused” by the stars - the stars do not initiate anything, but there is an ongoing two-way relationship between ourselves and the stars.

Taking it another step further, he believed that the singleness of the solar system paralleled the singleness of human experience, and that “we are one.” That there is a single external world, and a single internal world. The single internal world is not accessible by our conscious selves, rather it exists in the unconscious mind. He believed that each person’s unconscious mind contains not only personal unconscious, but at a deeper level contains collective material that in inherited - the “collective unconscious.” Jung felt that we can learn a lot about the human psyche through astrology, not only because the stars and planets are an external reflection of our inner selves, but also because the inherently symbolic nature of astrology allows us to consciously correlate symbols with unconscious knowledge. Jung felt that astrology is a language of symbols that mediates between levels of consciousness.

You may be familiar with Jung’s concept of “archetypes,” which make suggestions to the conscious mind as mystical images or symbols, and which spring from “known” patterns of behavior within the collective unconscious. For example, Jung thought that we essentially “know” how to act in a given situation, but that this knowledge is not present in the conscious mind until the situation arises, and it will never be brought to consciousness if the situation never arises. An “instinctual archetype” exists in the unconscious mind that contains the knowledge of how to act in that situation, until the archetype is constellated into the conscious mind. This is different from an “archetypal archetype,” which is not instinctual or behavioral, but represents a more complex knowledge or understanding of something that we haven’t realized with our conscious mind.

Since much of Jung’s work was focused around the collective unconscious and its archetypes, he was probably interested in anything that had a long-standing presence in human history. Since the collective unconscious has been bringing forth astrology into human experience for so many centuries, Jung apparently that it must be important enough to deserve some attention.

Jung associated different archetypes with specific planets, and believed birth charts would generate archetypal images to him that told him something about the subject of the chart. He frequently looked at the birth charts of his patients, and believed that the symbols in the charts made suggestions to him from the collective unconscious about that person’s psyche.

Jung believed strongly in the I Ching, and invented the term synchronicity to describe psychic “coincidence.”

Carl G. Jung is widely recognized as a genius in the field of psychology who made great strides towards understanding the complex human psyche. His most well-known work formed the basis of Psychological Type, later turned into the popular Myers-Briggs Type Indicator psychometric instrument.

In fact the whole of mythology could be taken as a sort of projection of the collective unconscious. We can see this most clearly if we look at the heavenly constellations, whose originally chaotic forms are organized through the projection of images. This explains the influence of the stars as asserted by astrologers. These influences are nothing but unconscious instrospective perceptions of the collective unconscious.”

Alchemy is inconceivable with the influence of her elder sister astrology, and the statements of these three disciplines must be taken into account in any psychological evaluation of the luminaries.”

What is a natal chart?

In astrology, your natal chart (sometimes called birth
chart) is a graph that shows the positions of the planets
and astrological houses in the sky at the moment of
your birth.

How is my natal chart different from my horoscope?

Your natal chart is much more detailed and accurate than
your horoscope. A popular horoscope considers only the
position of the Sun, whereas your natal chart includes
hundreds of pieces of data. Mark Twain once said: “The
difference between a good word and the right word is like
the difference between fire and firefly.” Similarly, your
popular horoscope may hold some hints of truth, but your
natal chart tells us the real story of your natural personality.

What can my natal chart show me?

Analyzing the planetary positions and relationships in your
natal chart affords a remarkably profound and revealing
glimpse into your natural character, with its inherent
strengths and weaknesses. Among other things, your natal
chart will tell you: A) what type of partner and relationship
you seek and will be best matched with, B) what type of
job or career your natural strengths and weaknesses are
best suited for, and C) obstacles that need to be overcome
in your life. Most importantly, your natal chart will help
you to understand your desires, motivations, and why you
are the way that you are.

Why do you need my exact time and place of birth to calculate my natal chart?

For a natal chart to be accurate, we must know the exact
positions of the stars at the exact moment of your birth.
Since the houses of the zodiac revolve one degree every
four minutes, an accurate time of birth is necessary to
determine your Ascendant sign and some planetary
aspects. Although we can generate a natal chart without
these highly time-sensitive positions included, we’d much
rather give you the more accurate chart that is generated
with an exact time and place of birth.
